Happy Birthday!

Mmm, cake!

This weekend we celebrated Cal's first birthday. We were blessed with great weather for the event which took place at the playground by our church. Cal was, once again, inundated with gifts, friends and family. Best of all, he got a good taste of freedom with his own piece of birthday cake...always a hit. With a little encouragement, he managed to cover his face and the sides of his head with bright blue frosting. In addition to the sweet taste of the cake, my little scientist was also very interested in that gooshy feeling of frosting in his hands and between the fingers.

After cleaning him up and settling down for the night, we decided that a special birthday trip to Binder Park Zoo was in order. The weather was perfect for a drive and a walk through the areas best family-friendly zoo. It was equally fun for Mom and Dad to see Cal recognize these animals from toys and TV shows (though most of them were classified as "kitty", his favorite animal de jour).

The treasure was in the little stuff, we had a chance to pet some goats (or grab the horns) and touch a wild frog that Daddy caught on the walk to the Africa exhibit. I'll admit that it was a pretty cool experience to be that close to and to feed the giraffes in the Africa exhibit. The highlight of Cal's day, however, may have been the ice cream cone that he got to eat as we toured Africa. Always considerate of others, Cal was quick to offer his left-overs to the giraffe.
He was, of course, beat at the end of the day and our walk back to the USA put him to sleep.

So Big!!

Calvin is just weeks away from being one! Is that right? Didn't we just get pregnant? Didn't I just go into labor? YIKES!! Why is he crawling already? He canNOT be almost one!! My little man is certainly coming into his own these days too. He is VERY independent and stubborn (I know you are all shocked!) But he is also very snuggly and LOVES giving kisses....to the dog and sometimes his parents. :-)M
